শিকলবাহা | Silence of the Seashell

Under Construction

Winner of  World Cinema Fund (WCF) from Berlinale and a project of La Fabrique Cinema Du Monde in Cannes.

DIRECTOR’s NOTE | I received a phone call from a friend (Bijoy); his mother had just passed away – he wished he could bring back her ashes to the homeland they left decades ago. I started writing a script; the script grew with me over the years. By the fifth draft, I discovered myself in the script. Living in a self-censored time, it was about two long-lost friends meeting after years in search of a lost river. But by the time I started shooting, the river detoured the script into my private space with my partner – it was about three of us in a triangle. And in the editing table, to my surprise, I rediscovered the powerful silence of the character I drew around my partner. Resisting the orthodoxy best featuring our time, she has been hiding in her own shell for years. I tried harder to listen to her heavy breathing in a corrupt post-colonial society. Her indomitable spirit forced my camera to focus on her – I had to question my own political position. I realised that women have not only the power to give life but can take it away as well. I felt small in front of her… after many years, I fell in love with her again!
